'Fix norms for donations from MPlAD funds'

The CPI(M) has urged Chairperson of Rajya Sabha and Speakers of Parliament and State legislatures to allow  MPs and MlAs to donate money to Jammu & Kashmir flood relief funds from the MPlAD funds. The party asked the presiding authorities of legislatures to set norms on this regard, allowing MPs and MlAs to contribute to the unprecedented calamity.

“I am writing to you with a request that MPs who are very concerned and agonised with the plight of people in Jammu & Kashmir in the aftermath of the unprecedented floods that have ravaged the State feel that they may be permitted to send a part of their MPlAD funds to contribute to the relief and rehabilitation needs,” said CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury in a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairperson Hamid Ansari.

Yechry also sought for fixing norms for such donations from MPlAD funds by insisting maximum limit. “It has been the usual practice that such a direction is given whenever major national disasters destroy lives and property in various parts of the country. Following this practice, I would request you to please instruct the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to permit us to donate part of our MPlAD fund to assist the relief operations,” he said.
