Assam Police have arrested five miscreants for attempting to chase and stop the vehicle of Arunachal Pradesh Governor’s wife, Rita Rajkhowa while she was travelling to Itanagar from Guwahati on Sunday night.

The shocking incident took place around 11.45 pm when Rita was travelling to Itanagar accompanied by a driver from Raj Bhavan of Arunachal Pradesh and a PSO provided by the Assam Police.

“A white coloured Swift D’zire car chased the vehicle in which the Governor’s wife was travelling on National Highway 37, even dangerously overtaking the Raj Bhavan vehicle after crossing Sonapur Town. There were five miscreants in the car including the driver and they tried to stop the vehicle by giving hand signals and shouting. The persons were not known to the Governor’s wife,” a statement issued by the Arunachal Pradesh Raj Bhavan said on Monday.

As the vehicle in which Rita Rajkhowa was travelling did not stop, the miscreants chased them again and made an abortive attempt to stop the vehicle.

“Rita Rajkhowa informed her husband, who in turn requested the Arunachal Pradesh DGP, Assam DGP and also the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati to provide necessary security to his wife,” the statement said.

“Rita Rajkhowa then went to the Jagiroad Police Station and reported the matter, and they provided her escort from the Dharampur Police Station,” it said adding that the intentions of the miscreants could be to commit robbery and causing harm to Rita Rajkhowa.

later police from Kamrup East district arrested the five miscreants immediately after the incident, police said adding that while three suspects including the owner of the vehicle were from Assam, two others were from Ghaziabad and Muzaffarabad in UP.

Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa while expressing concern over the incident urged the police to set in motion the system of “Highway Police Patrolling” on regular basis. He has also urged the people travelling by road should be fully prepared to any such eventuality and take necessary precautionary measures.
