FIRs lodged against Arshad Madani in Assam for provocative speech

Three FIRs have been lodged in different police stations in Assam against Jamiat Ulema-E Hind, Moulana Arshad Madani for ‘provocative statements’ even as Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay on Wednesday said that police are going to probe the case.

The development came following the statements of the minority leader at a meeting held in the Constitution Club in New Delhi on Monday where he had reportedly stated that the Muslims in Assam are not going to tolerate if their names are dropped from the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is being updated by the Assam government under the guidance of the Supreme Court.

Assam burst into protests as soon as the electronic media as well as the print media highlighted the statements made by Madani on Monday and different organizations took to the streets burning the effigies of Madani and Jamiat Ulema for making the ‘communal speech’ aimed at ‘agitating the Muslims in Assam’.

“Police will probe the whole case as the event was held in constitution club in New Delhi on Monday last and people from Assam had gone there. Whole thing will be probed and there is no two laws one of common people and one for intellectuals,” the Director General of Police said today.

“We have received three FIRs, two lodged in two different police stations in Guwahati and one lodged in Tezpur against some comments made by the Jamiat Ulema chief which allegedly aims at creating communal divide,” said Sahay while interacting with the newsmen today.

Madani took part in the seminar titled “Current Political Impasse in Assam: Updating the NRC and the Question of Citizenship” organized by Delhi Action Committee for Assam (DACA) on Monday. Some of the leading intellectuals of Assam including Hiren Gohain, Haider Hussain, Abdul Mannan and former Nort-East Hill University professor Apurba Kumar Barua also participated and spoke in the seminar.

It may be mentioned here that the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had earlier stated that the government would consider those who try to derail the process of updation of NRC as anti-national and warned that the government would deal with them strictly.
