A major fire broke out late Monday noon in Bow Bazaar locality of old Kolkata though no casualty was reported till reports last came in. The fire broke out in a plywood factory which was surrounded by densely populated localities, State Fire Brigade Minister Javed Khan said adding 25 fire tenders had been pressed into service.
Kolkata had had a weird history of fires with the latest in the memory was the one at a South Kolkata hospital that killed about 100 people. About a dozen people died in a similar fire at Stephen Court Building at the posh Park Street area a few years ago. The Nandram Market fire in a multi-storey whole-sale market took several days to be extinguished. “We are trying to control the fire but its source has not been ascertained as yet” said the Minister.
