The Supreme Court on Monday asked Centre to file a comprehensive report by May 6 on the basic facilities available to Rohingya refugees at their camps situated in Faridabad, Mewat, and Delhi after refugees complained absence of drinking water, toilets, and electricity.
The Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said, “let us first try to solve the human problem.” Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta agreed to file a comprehensive report based on the allegations made by the petitioners who are Rohingya refugees. The matter will be heard next on May 9.
Senior advocate CU Singh, appearing for one of the petitioners alleged that basic amenities like drinking water and toilets were not provided at the Rohingya refugee camps due to which they were affected by several diseases including diarrohoea.
Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan said that Rohingyas were the worst sufferers as they cannot work due to absence of work permit nor are they being given identity proofs available to similarly placed illegal migrants from Bangladesh.
ASG pointed out that the problem has prevailed for the past decade but the petitioners have suddenly woken up to the issue.
