Father's 'sin' to leave child's fate hanging?

Eight-months-old pregnant Aasma, wife of the recently-arrested ISI agent Mohammad Kalam alias Ejaz, has decided not to nurture her unborn child. However, she would give birth to the child.

The probation department, soon after the announcement of Aasma, had expressed their proposal to take care of the nurturing as the unborn child would be a citizen of India.

Aasma, whose family is yet to overcome from the shattering revelation that the person whom they had thought to be an orphan was a Pakistani national working for ISI, had in her statement on Monday said that she would give birth to her child but will not nurture as it would be a child of a spy. She also added that she does not want to be ridden under this regret of being the wife of a spy for her entire lifetime.

Aasma’s father said he got his daughter married more than a year back but they never thought that Ejaz would turn out to be an ISI agent. He also said that Ezaj should be punished for the sin he had committed. Probation officer Usha Tiwari, when contacted and told about the development, said that it is the responsibility of the child welfare committee in case the mother does not want to nurture the child and they were ready for it. Further, she said that deciding the citizenship of the child was the work of law.

The entire family was still shocked over the development. Aasma’s sister Shehnaz, while disclosing about Ejaz, claimed that Babar, the son of her uncle, had introduced him to her family. She said that her father, a poor mason, agreed to get her elder sister Aasma married to Ejaz. “We belong to the Azimabad area of Arrah in Bihar and Babar works as a cloth merchant in Kolkata. Whenever we asked him (Ejaz) about his family, he said that he was an orphan and hailed from Kolkata,” she added.

Reports said a small marriage function was organised in October 2014 at Aasma’s house. “He remained at our house for a while after marriage and helped my father, but later he decided to move to Bareilly,” said Shehnaz. Ejaz reached Bareilly in January 2015 and started living in a rented room near the railway station. “He started working with photographers and also made marriage videos,” said Shehnaz. “He never said that he was from Pakistan or had a family there. I was informed that he had a mother, a sister and five brothers in Pakistan only after he was arrested.”

According to STF, Mohammad Kalam alias Mohammad Ejaz is an ISI agent who originally hails from the Irfanabad area of Islamabad, Pakistan. He was trained by the ISI and was sent to Bangladesh from Karachi with a Pakistani passport in January 2013. On February 9, 2013 with the help of Probeen, a Bangladeshi national, Ejaz sneaked into India and reached the house of Muhammad Irshad of South 24 Pargana, West Bengal.

Ejaz had been deployed to collect information on various military bases in western UP. The force recovered a cache of confidential military information and maps from him after her arrest in Meerut on last Friday. He had allegedly been deployed in place of Asif Ali, another ISI informer, who was arrested in August 2014.
