Farmers show of strength on

In a twist to the ongoing agitation on land acquisition for Becharji Special Investment Region (SIR), there is a split between two groups of farmers in Gujarat. Both the groups - one against the proposed SIR and other in favour of it organised rallies in the State capital Gandhinagar to show their strength.

At one point, the rallies were crossed but because of adequate police protection there was no untoward incident. Though, both the groups shouted slogans against each other, said a senior cop deployed on the route of rallies.

Even on last Thursday, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had intervened following the agitation by farmers of 44 villages in the Becharji area near the upcoming Maruti Suzuki limited’s car manufacturing facility. After hearing the concern of farmers, Modi assured them that the land wouldn’t acquired by the State Government without their consent.

He had also formed a committee comprising Cabinet Ministers Nitin Patel, Anandiben Patel and Saurabh Patel to review the situation.

The committee is expected to submit detail report in next three-four days. The State Government would give final decision on the issue before August 15.
