There is no shortage of fake medical doctors or even teachers in Kerala. But fake lawyers were quite unheard of hitherto in this literate State. A 27-year-old lady has demolished that forte and has earned the dubious reputation of being Kerala’s first indigenous fake lawyer.
Cessy Xavier, who does not have any law degree or the mandatory enrolment in Kerala Bar Council, made her colleagues eat from her hands as they whole heartedly believed whatever she said and made her an office bearer of Alappuzha Bar Association.
For almost two years, hundreds of heads turned when the elegant looking Xavier strode into the Alappuzha District Court premises. There was no reason to doubt her claims but the disappearance of certain important documents from the ABA office and an anonymous letter received by the office bearers tore apart her veil of impersonation.The letter stated that she had no law degree and this made the ABA office bearers to check her credentials. To their horror, they found that the enrolment number she had furnished with the ABA belonged to another lawyer practicing in Thiruvananthapuram.
The office bearers filed a case against her under sections 417, 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code. When the Police was about to arrest her under these charges, she made a vanishing act from the premises of the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Alappuzha whee she had come to surrender and seek bail.
Though the cops checked the entire district, the lady had disappeared without any trace.
On Thursday, she re-appeared, and that too in the Kerala High Court premises to file an anticipatory bail plea. At the time of going to Press, the status report was, Cessy came, filed the plea and fled again.
