Did you know actors of yesteryears Nadira, David, Sulochana alias Ruby Myers, and Dinshaw Billimoria were JewsIJ Once upon a time, Mumbai’s film industry was dominated by members of this community who had made India their home. Not only film stars, but for centuries Jew doctors, scientists, artists have contributed to India’s success story. India and Israel Governments kicked off celebration of 25 years of their diplomatic relations with an exhibition to highlight the contributions of Jews in India.
Jewish spiritual leader Shah Madar was the founder of Madariya Sufi order in India. Painter Mirra Alfassa was another spiritual leader of the 20th century. Russian microbiologist Waldemar Haffkine who made India his home invented Cholera and Plague vaccines saved Mumbai from Plague. Similarly, Fyzee Rahmain was the artist for Mahraja Sayaji Rao-II along with Raja Ravi Verma.
Jews have also contributed significantly to the Parsi Theatre in India.
“Jews were dominant performers in older times like the Khans (Shahrukh, Salman, Aamir) are today,” Amar Sinha, Secretary (Economic Relations) in External Affairs Ministry said on Tuesday while appreciating the contributions of Jews.
Sinha added that the two countries are constantly trying to make the relationship more multi-dimensional.
“Apart from defence and security we are collaborating in cyber security, agriculture and water. In education, we have signed over 20 pacts between Israeli and Indian universities,” Sinha said.
He added that with many regions in India facing water scarcity, Israel’s water technology has been of much help.
“The last 25 years have been great and we are looking at making next 25 years equally great,” said Israeli ambassador to Indian Daniel Carmon.
He added that so many Jews have made India their home before Independence and made contributions.
“Today also we are going to do a lot together,” Carmon added.
