Kolkata escaped a massive disaster by a whisker when a loud explosion on Sunday evening rocked the central business district of BBD Bag (Dalhousie Square) in Kolkata, police said adding no one was injured in the blast.

“Had it been a weekday dozens of people might have either been killed or injured,” a senior official said “consider the magnitude of the explosion that happened just besides the Stephen’s House, barely a hundred metre away from the colonial Writers’ Buildings.

The blast which happened at 5.30 pm left a 20 feet x 20 feet crater with bricks and other materials flying tens of metres away under the impact of the explosion eye-witnesses said adding, “things would have been different had it not been a Sunday.”

Police had cordoned off the area and investigations were being conducted by the bomb squad and forensic experts, sources said, adding the Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation experts had also come to the area because there was an electric box within metres of the blast site.

Incidentally the Special Investigation Team of Kolkata Police had recently busted a module of Jamat ul Mujahideen Bangladesh which had been preparing for large-scale subversive activities in India. “The police are trying to find out whether there is a possible JMB link or not,” a police official said.
