The Mumbai Police on Tuesday served a notice on Pakistani singer-composer-musician Adnan Sami for overstaying in India after his visa expired earlier this month.
In their notice, the police asked Sami to explain within a week the reasons for overstaying in India, a country that he has made his second home, and give them information about the efforts made by him to seek renewal of his visa.
Forty-four-year-old Sami, whose visa was valid from September 26, 2012 to October 6, 2013, had informed the police earlier that he had applied for extension of his visa, but failed to produce documentary proof to substantiate his claim.
In the notice, police have made it mandatory on Sami, who has been served notice under Section 14 (a) of the Foreigners (Amendment) Act, 2004 that deals with foreigners overstaying in the country after the expiry of their visas, to get his overstay regularised by paying the necessary penalty and have his visa renewed in one month.
