Former Rajya Sabha MP Wasim Ahmad on Wednesday demanded an impartial probe into the allegations of financial irregularities and improprieties against the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor Zameeruddin Shah after President Pranab Mukherjee ordered a probe into the matter.
“I welcome the probe ordered by the President of India who is the Visitor of AMU. I now urge the HRD Minister to institute a time-bound inquiry against Shah and nominate persons in the enquiry panel for a fair, impartial probe,” Ahmed told The Pioneer.
Ahmad, who was Visitor’s nominee to AMU for several years in various capacities, said that the first step the powers of the Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor should be ceased forthwith and they should be asked to proceed on leave.
“This is necessary so that they are not able to influence and pressurise the potential witnesses and thus the process of the enquiry, through irregular appointments, promotions, awarding of benefits, etc as well as through threats of punitive actions and illegal gratifications,” he said.
Ahmad, who spearheaded a campaign against Shah, had submitted a memorandum to HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar along with a report of the CAG into the alleged irregularities.
