The Congress in Tamil Nadu which has been waging demonstrations and issuing statements against the Narendra Modi-led NDA Government at the Centre for not reviving Jallikattu (taming of bulls) suffered a major setback on Sunday with a former Congress leader herself blaming the UPA Government for the Supreme Court ban on the traditional sport. Jayanthi Natarajan, who served as Environment Minister in the UPA Government led by Manmohan Singh blamed the Congress and its senior leader Jayaram Ramesh for the ban on Jallikattu by the SC. “So long as I was the Minister in charge of environment and forests, I ensured that no harm is done to Jallikattu. But Jayaram Ramesh who became the Minister following my resignation from the Council of Ministers altered the statement which was to be submitted to the SC which was hearing a petition against Jallikattu. At his insistence, the list portrayed bulls as endangered species,” Natarajan told reporters at Chennai on Sunday. She said the Centre cannot do anything to revive or resume Jallikattu without the approval of the Supreme Court. “It was the SC which banned the sport after hearing both the parties,” said Natarajan.
