Many former bureaucrats and police officers, advocates, Left ideologists and social activists on Friday petitioned President Ram Nath Kovind demanding the institution of a Commission of Inquiry into the Delhi riots, accusing partiality in the ongoing probe by the Delhi Police.
Retired police officers Julio Riberio, Saleem Ali, ex-bureaucrats Wajhat Habibullah, EAS Sarma, activist Aruna Roy and lawyers like Prashant Bhushan were among the 72 signatories accusing total partiality on basis of religion by Delhi Police in the riots-related cases.
Apart from allegations of saving BJP leaders from the cases, the activists and retired officials accused the Delhi Police of custodial torture of Muslims and of those who participated in the protests against CAA-NRC. “A credible and unbiased probe is crucial to ensure public trust. The investigation cannot be allowed to become a fishing and roving expedition aimed at causing a chilling effect on dissent and protest in the country.
