A signboard restricting entry of non-Hindus in famous Somnath Temple raised many eyebrows in Gujarat. The circular displayed at the entry of one of the 12 Jyotirlings, states that non-Hindus will require to take permission to offer prayer to lord Shiva.
The Somnath temple is being managed by Shri Somnath Trust. According to Vijaysinh Chavda, the general manager of the trust, the circular on the entry of non-Hindus was issued three days back and subsequently a signboard has been displayed.
Sources connected with the trust said that Somnath temple is a holy pilgrimage of people following Hindu faith and only those who believe in Hinduism should be allowed to offer prayers.
“Keeping this in mind the trust has taken the decision. Though non-Hindus can enter inside the temple, but they will have to take prior permission from the trust. Besides, on the occasion of Shivratri and other festivals priority will be given to only Hindus,” he added, requesting anonymity.
“The decision has also been taken in view of security of the temple. The non-Hindus willing to offer prayer to lord Shiva will have to fill a form and disclose their identity and only after that they would be allowed to enter inside the premise,” said the source, adding that as a result of it, the trust will have record of visiting non-Hindus.
According to him there are many religions who are not allowing people of other faiths inside their religious places and there is nothing wrong in it and we respect their feelings too.
