Engineers threaten to intensify stir against quota in promotion

The power engineers in Uttar Pardesh will intensify the agitation against the move of the Union Government to present the Constitution (117th amendment) Bill in the lok Sabha for reservation in promotion to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe State employees in Promotion in Government service.

Sarvjan Hitay Sarakshan Samiti, an organisation comprising of all departments of the State Government to fight against the Constitution amendment has given a call for nation wide protest meeting on June 12. The Constitution Amendment Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha during the previous Congress led UPA regime and the Bill remains to be passed by the lok Sabha.

The Supreme Court in April 2012 had quashed the legislation for granting reservation in promotion to the SC/ST employees. A year later, to neutralise the verdict of the Supreme Court, the then UPA Government had introduced the Constitution (117th amendment) Bill 2013 in Rajya Sabha. The Bill was passed by the Upper House of the Parliament. Bahuajn Samaj Party had vociferously raised the issue in both the Houses of the Parliament in 2012 and 2013 demanding restoration of  reservation in promotion for the SC/ ST employees.

The president of the Samiti Shailendra Dube said here on Sunday that protest meeting will be held at all the State Capitals on June 12 to register  protest against the Constitutitution Amendment Bill and mobilize support to mount pressure on the elected MPs.
