ECI notice to Ajmal for remark against BJP

The Election Commission of India has sent a show-cause notice to lok Sabha MP Badaruddin Ajmal for making a controversial statement against the BJP last month.

The outgoing lok Sabha MP from Dhubri lok sabha constituency also heads the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

The Commission has asked Ajmal, who is seeking a re-election from Assam’s Dhubri lok Sabha constituency for a second time as an AIUDF candidate, to reply to the show-cause notice within Monday.

The show-cause notice was served to Ajmal for violation of Model Code of Conduct , which has been in force in the State for the lok Sabha polls. On March 22, Ajmal had told the media in Assam that the almighty will not forgive anyone if BJP wins even one seat in the lok Sabha polls and that it is the duty of every Muslim to ensure BJP’s defeat.

Following the statement, the BJP has lodged a formal complaint with the ECI against Ajmal. Sending the show-cause notice, the office of the Assam CEO said that the Commission might take necessary action against Ajmal, if the AIUDF leader fails to reply to the notice within the stipulated time.

Meanwhile, the State BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday expressed his satisfaction over the matter and said that the Commission must initiate stern action against these kinds of violation of Model Code of Conduct.
