EC summons Ashok Chavan, Madhu Koda

The Election Commission got cracking against former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and former Jharkhand CM Madhu Koda for submitting false election expense accounts. Following the Supreme Court order upholding EC’s jurisdiction to probe details of poll expenses, the bench asked the two leaders to appear before the Commission on May 23.

The Commission notice to Chavan sought pointed to alleged expenses towards “paid news” that was not reflected in the expenses account submitted by the former CM in 2009. Slapping fresh notice on Chavan, the EC asked him to appear before it “either in person or through his authorised representative or counsel”.

In the other case, the poll panel asked Koda to explain in person or through his counsel for furnishing false election expenditure records during the 2009 polls. The Commission acted pursuant to SC order last week that directed the Commission to enquire into the complaint against Chavan within 45 days.
