With name calling and personal attacks becoming the norm of the day in speeches addressed by political parties in the run-up to the Bihar polls, Election Commission on Friday sounded caution urging political parties to show restraint.
Expressing deep anguish over the ‘plummeting level’ of speeches the commission warned political parties that these are aimed at causing mutual hatred. Issuing fresh instructions, the panel urged parties to choose restraint and avoid making vicious personal attacks. It said, “The tone and tenor of the political speeches have been found to be calculated to cause mutual hatred or ill-will and aimed at to aggravate the differences between different political parties and classes of citizens on the grounds of religion, caste and community which the Model Code of Conduct dissuades.”
