DU's History, Sociology syllabi past first hurdle

Two courses — History and Sociology — which had not received the nod of Delhi University's Academic Council due to unprepared syllabi, on Friday, got their first approval from the Faculty of Social Sciences. It will now head to the Standing Committee for further considerations and finally be tabled in the upcoming Academic Council meeting, which is likely to be held on May 27.

"Both the pending courses of History and Sociology were approved in a meeting of the Faculty of Social Science. After taking much time, to prepare the syllabi for 20 papers of Dicipline-I courses in each and six papers of Dicipline-II courses of Sociology, it was finalised and approved for further proceedings by the department," said Sangeet Ragi, Deputy Dean of the university.

The Department of Adult Eduction has also got approval for the six papers proposed under Dicipline-II courses. Ragi said that it will depend on the colleges if they want to opt for these courses in DC-II category after the AC approval is confirmed for the six papers.

The History department has come out with two sets of papers of DC-II. As per university guidelines, each DC-I has 20 papers and DC-II six papers, but the department which had disagreed to it during the syllabi making, under the Four-Year Undergradute Programme (FYUP), has now demanded to give a choice of two sets of DC-II courses, making a total of 12 papers.

"It is not appropriate for a single department to ask for such things. When others have just a set of six papers in DC-I, I am not sure if AC will approve their demand of 12 papers. The meeting already witnessed a divide in the department over this proposal," said a senior professor from the university.

Meanwhile, the second consecutive day of 'Open House' session witnessed protests by the section of teachers opposing the FYUP.
