Dravidians to stage sacred thread ceremony for pigs; Brahmins upset

Published on:

Tamil Nadu could see another round of caste conflict in the coming weeks as one of the Dravidian outfits is getting ready to celebrate Avani Avittam (sacred thread ceremony observed by the Brahmin community) by making pigs wear the sacred thread.

“On August 7, when the Brahmins observe the Avani Avittam, we will hold sacred thread ceremonies for pigs in front of the Government Sanskrit College in Chennai,” said Elangovan, spokesman of Thanathai Periyar Dravida Kazhakam, an outfit known for its extreme views against Hindu religion.

Elangovan said the event is to give vent to their anger against the Brahmins for their superiority complex. “The sacred thread ceremony is observed by the Brahmins to proclaim to the world that they are a superior race. We are totally against religions and idol worshipping,” added Elangovan.

Billboards with the message “poonool (Tamil for sacred thread) turns a Parappan into a Brahmin and a Tamilian into a Sudhran (lower caste)” have been put all over the metropolis with an invitation to the general public to attend the function. The poster is an invite to an event where pigs will be adorned with the poonool, in a symbol of protest against Brahminism.

last year many parts of the society saw unpleasant incidents of temple priests being beaten up by the volunteers of the Dravidian outfits as a mark of resentment against the Brahmins.
