The CPI(M) Politburo on Tuesday urged the Centre not to succumb to US pressure to join American-led joint military operations against ISIS and that it should insist on seeking UN sanction for action against the militant group.
In a statement, the CPI(M) ‘warned’ the Modi Government from deviating from the ‘basic position’ of India on this regard.
“The Obama administration has been putting great pressure on India of late to join a US-led coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It may take advantage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in New York at the moment to make India fall in line with its plans,” said the party’s politburo.
The left party argued that India must insist America to get approval from United Nations for acting against ISIS. Without UN approval, America's actions would be unilateral and illegal, it said. “The Government of India must, under no circumstances, fall prey to these machinations. It must never join any unilateral US initiative of this sort, no matter how strongly such an initiative is portrayed as defending ‘humanity’ against ‘barbarism’,”the CPI(M) maintained.
