With a view to establishing an All India Association of Vice-Chancellors & Academicians, a meeting was organised on Monday at the Chandiwala Estate at Kalkaji in New Delhi. The need for such an organisation was intensively debated by the Vice-Chancellors and Academicians from various parts of the country, particularly in the backdrop of the growing dominance of bureaucrats not only in the academic organisation, but also in positions where academicians largely fit in.

lamenting on the prevalent state of affairs in Higher Education, the members felt the urgent need to bring in correctives in the distortions that have crept into the education system in order to ensure that the lob sidedness and unevenness in the pattern of education in the country was effectively streamlined and research and education akin to market requirements and ground realities achieved. The event was presided over by Prof Namvar Singh of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
