DMK to support 'secular' party

The DMK will support a Government which would build the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project and ensure secularism, according to party chief M Karunanidhi. Addressing party workers who had come to listen to his speech on the concluding day of the 10th State Conference of the DMK, Karunanidhi said he would extend support to the Government which stands for social justice.

Though he did not mention any parties by name, the nonagenarian leader’s words made it clear that the Congress would be his preferred choice for making a Government at the Centre.

Though the DMK and its supreme leader maintained a studied silence about the parties with which they would forge an alliance, Karunanidhi’s words indicated that Congress would get his nod for forming a Government at the Centre in the eventuality of a stalemate. The Third Front too qualifies to get the support of the DMK if they dump the AIADMK.

Earlier, leaders of other constituents in the alliance floated by the DMK spat venom at the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. VCK leader Thol Thirumavalvn, who got his father’s name changed from Ramasamy to Tholkappiayan to express his hatred for Hinduism, alleged Modi is the one who massacred 2,000 innocent Muslims in Gujarat. Thirumavalavan was silent about the courts and the special investigation team appointed by the Supreme Court freeing Modi of all allegations.
