The DMK would withdraw its Ministers from the Union Council of Ministers if India does not insist on an independent inquiry into war crimes in Sri lanka, according to party chief M Karunanidhi.
“There should be an independent international enquiry into the genocide that occurred in Sri lanka and the perpetrators should be punished within a time frame. If India fails to insist on a resolution like this, we will be forced to withdraw our representatives from the union council of ministers,” Karunanidhi said in a statement released late Friday. The nonagenarian leader wants India to make an amendment to the resolution introduced by the US which he says is not sufficient to pressurize the island nation on the human rights violations perpetrated on the ethnic Tamils in Sri lanka. “DMK’s continuation in the union council of ministers will become meaningless if INdia fails to bring in a resolution with the comity of other nations to put pressure on Sri lanka,’ said Karunanidhi in the statement.
The DMK has five members in the union council of ministers which include M K Algiri, Union minister for fertilisers and chemicals, S. Jagatrakshakan, Palanimanickam, Napoleon and S Gandhiselvan (all ministers of State). The DMK ministers stand out because of their lacklustre performance in New Delhi.
