The BJP on Friday petitioned Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee seeking the disqualification of Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy as a member of the State Assembly because he had defected to the TMC after winning his seat from the Krishnagar North seat on a saffron ticket. State Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari submitted the petition to the
Speaker --- through party MLA Manoj Tigga --- seeking the disqualification of Roy under anti-defection laws.
In the petition Adhikari sought the disqualification Roy, and wrote “I request you to dispose of the same (case) as soon as possible…” Roy a former BJP national vice president who crossed over to that party from the TMC (an outfit he co-founded with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) in 2017. In 2021 Assembly elections Roy won the Krishnagar
North Assembly seat on BJP ticket and within a few days of the elections he defected to the Trinamool Congress before being appointedits national vice president.
Earlier attacking the TMC he said “the Trinamool cannot get away with by engineering such defections because I know how to get the anti-defection laws implemented… if the Speaker does not take a decision then we will move the court to get justice.” He had also said, “Todna-Jodna (breaking and joining) is part of TMC’s dirty politics. They have been doing this for the past 10 years and nobody opposed it. But it is being opposed now and action will be taken under the anti-defection law… We will get this law implemented … and whosoever wants to change parties is free to do so but before that one should resign the post of MLA.
