The Dilli Haat at Janakpuri came to life once again on Saturday evening with the cultural display and artistic performances of those who had come from various States. The place was dotted by people of all ages curious to explore the art and craft on display.
The Dilli Haat Utsav is a series of weekend festivals being organised by the Delhi Tourism in collaboration with Department of Art, Culture and languages. Artisans and craftsmen from States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and West Bengal among others had come to display their products in a bid to attract people. The organisers have set up shops for the artisans to display their products. The department is experimenting with new ways to promote the city’s heritage and make people aware of India’s composite culture.
“My family has been in this business for generations and this event offers me a platform to showcase my art and craft to the people of Delhi,” said an artisan Ajit Sharkar who had come all the way from Kolkata displaying his handmade decorative products. The shops were circular and roofed with linen cone like tents.
Dilli Haat Janakpuri played host to performances of Bhangra and Gidda by Punjabi Academy here on Saturday. The open air amphitheatre witnessed melodies by Punjabi singers (both male and female) along with colourful dance performances, which captivated the crowd. People in large numbers had gathered to have their share of cultural treat being offered through the concept of Dilli Haat Utsav.
There were musical performances by well-known artists from Punjab such as Parveen Sharma, who enthralled the crowds with their foot-tapping numbers.
These series of festivals happening every weekend since September 13, 2014 aim to promote cultural tourism in the city and bring together artists and performers from across the country giving them a platform to showcase their heritage.
Institutions like Sahitya Kala Parishad, Hindi Academy, Urdu Academy, Punjabi Academy etc. will be hosting cultural shows that include celebrity performance, Mushaira, musical performances, Kavi Sammelan and dance shows throughout the festival. This initiative also gives an exclusive platform to new and seasoned artists to showcase their talent.
After the dose of entertainment, people tasted delicious and delectable food items from various cuisines in the country offered at the air-conditioned food court. An elaborate presentation and sale of handicraft and handlooms items was also there to satisfy visitor's shopping appetite.
