The Centre has removed a DIG-rank IPS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, lingala Vijaya Prasad, from service.

Prasad, 1997 batch IPS officer posted in Mizoram, was removed from the service due to “unsatisfactory” service records, a Home Ministry official said.

The performance of the DIG-rank officer was reviewed after completion of his 15 years of service in the IPS and he was found to be unfit to continue.

The performance review of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers was conducted to weed out “deadwood”, the home ministry officer said on condition of anonymity.

As per rules, performance review of an all-India service officer is conducted twice - first after the completion of 15 years of qualifying service, and then after 25 years.

The order removing them was issued by the Home Ministry on Wednesday after approval by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the service rules, the Central Government may, in consultation with the State Government concerned, require a member of the service to retire in public interest, after giving at least a three-month notice in writing or as many months pay and allowances in lieu of such notice.

Prasad’s sacking is the latest in a series of such actions by the Centre in recent times. The MHA had earlier terminated the services of two senior women IPS officers - Jyoti S Belur, a 1993-batch officer of Uttarakhand cadre and Maria lou Fernandes, a 1991-batch officer of Maharashtra cadre -facing inquiry for “unauthorised leave” for a long period.

Another IPS probationer Abhishek Kumar Singh, of 2011 batch of Gujarat cadre and 1996-batch Kerala cadre IPS Rajan Singh too had been removed for “unauthorised leave”. This apart, two other IPS probationers, Kushum Puniya ( 2010 batch Jharkhand cadre) an Kumar Gautam (2011 batch West Bengal cadre) too had been sacked for non-completion of their training.

The government even removed two IPS officers - A M Juri of 2000 batch and K C Agrawal of 2002 batch.-in Chhattisgarh from service for “non-performance”.
