In what is being viewed as her desperate attempt to neutralise the Saradha chit fund effect before the general elections, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said her Government would compensate about a lakh of cheated chit fund depositors by the Durga Pujas that start from October 10.
She also added that the Government would make good the losses suffered about 3-4 lakh depositors by Kali Puja or Diwali. The Government largesse would begin from September 30 when it would hand over cheques of compensation to about a 1,000 duped depositors.
The multi-crore ponzi fund scam in Bengal hit the headlines in April after Saradha group defaulted in payments to its lakhs of depositors.Subsequent revelations saw the names of a host of Ministers and MPs getting embroiled in the scam which was not the one of its kind as many more groups started defaulting taking the estimated worth of the scam to one lakh-plus crore rupees.
