The Bengal Government was happy that Sheikh Hasina had won the general elections in Bangladesh, State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters on Monday.

“I have personally spoken to her (Sheikh Hasina) and congratulated her,” the Chief Minister said adding her Government was “happy that Sheikh Hasina has won the elections,” by a landslide margin. “I also congratulate the people of that country,” Banerjee said adding her Government wanted the relationship between the two countries to strengthen further.

On the Twitter she wrote, “heartiest congratulations to Sheikh Hasina ji on the victory in the Bangladesh general elections.”

The victory would further strengthen the good Indo-Bangladesh relations she said. “We already share a cordial relation with Bangladesh and I want that relationship to strengthen with time,” Banerjee said adding the two countries should work together towards maintaining peace and stability in the region.

In the Bangladesh general elections held on December 30, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League-led coalition roared back to power with an overwhelming majority clinching 260 out of 300 seats humbling the opposition alliance led by Bangladesh National Party.
