Didi: Even God can't provide a corruption-free society

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said there could be no foolproof system and that even God could not provide a corruption-free society.

"Can you control corruption 100 per cent ... Can there be a corruption-free system... Even God cannot ensure a corruption-less system... Let alone a small human being like me," the Chief Minister said.

Mamata was speaking in a programme on the occasion of Teacher' Day. During the occasion, she declared that a new chapter on 'moral character building' would be introduced in school syllabus.

In an apparent attempt to distance her Government from the recent spate of corruption cases Mamata said, "In a big system there is always possibility of some mistakes... There may be lapses but this does not mean that each and every person in the society is corrupt."

Under sustained attack from the Opposition parties — for running a 'corrupt' Government — in the wake of the arrest of senior Trinamool Congress leaders like former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and senior party leader Anubrata Mondal, the Chief Minister launched a frontal attack against the Left Front for destroying all documentary evidences of corruption during the Marxist period.

"There are still evidences of some lapses (read corruption) during our time as we have preserved the papers but all the documentary evidences of the Left period were destroyed and so they cannot be caught," the Chief Minister said.

She also said a person is not known by the property he or she owned but the honesty and integrity one exhibited. "How much money one owns is not the only identity of a person. Always remember the money you own today might perish tomorrow. Whether I will remain honest or not will depend on me only. All fingers are not the same. Just as there are good people in society, there are also bad people. So, for some bad people it would be unfair to malign the entire society," she said.

Meanwhile in a latest development the Enforcement Directorate investigating the money laundering part of the school level recruitment scam, on Monday arrested a chartered accountant who was also involved in foreign exchange conversion business.
