Sambiya Sohrab, the son of Trinamool Congress leader and former MlA Md Sohrab, who crushed to death an Indian Air Force corporal Abhimanyu Gaud last Wednesday, still remained traceless even three days after committing the crime though his tower location details till late on Wednesday noon pointed out at some kind of dereliction on the part of police brass, sources said.
Till five hours after the accident Sambiya (and not Ambiya his elder brother who was earlier thought to be the main accused) was around central Kolkata before quietly moving out of the city senior officers say.
Bizarrely enough the police did nothing for more than 3-4 hours to trace the culprit though they had his family details and they only swung into action when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the accident site at Red Road and ordered action even asking the police to “slap a murder case” against the accused. “But by that time the “bird had flow away.”
A section of the police said the accused might have slipped out of India and flown off to some Middle Eastern country via Nepal or Bangladesh adding a look-out notice had been issued against them.
Meanwhile video clippings of the accident showed the speeding car hitting the victim before whooshing past early in not-so-foggy morning. The impact was so huge that the victim’s shoe was flung about 100 feet away past an Army column which was marching behind Abhimanyu’s file.
More shocking part of the story was that driver had heated exchange with a traffic constable who had stopped him from entering the parade area out-of-bound for public vehicles. In a fit of rage he drove out of the scene in great speed and hit the victim a few metres away.
