The coronavirus situation worsened in Mumbai’s Dharavi locality on Thursday, as 26 more persons tested positive in a single day in Asia’s largest slum.

With the 26 fresh cases reported during last 24 hours, the total number of cases in Dharavi mounted to 86. However, details of the newly infected cases were not available till late in the evening.

Five fresh cases had been reported on Wednesday, taking the total number of infected cases to 60.  Early this week, three more fresh deaths had been reported from the densely populated slum, where the total number of deaths has risen from four to seven.

Of the fatalities in Dharavi, two each deaths have been reported from Dr Baliga Nagar and Kalyanwadi, while one death has been reported from Musilim Nagar, Social Nagar and Nehru Chawl.

After the first few positive cases of Covid-19 were reported in Dharavi in the first week of this month, an anxious city civic health machinery has been constantly monitoring the situation in this slum.

The health officials’ anxiety should be seen in the light of the fact that they apprehend community spread of the Coronavirus in this slum.
