Depression in the Bay: Rain likely to move over Andhra

Published on:

Well marked low pressure in South-West Bay of Bengal has intensified in depression and was likely to move north-northwest along the coast of Tamil Nadu and South Andhra and intensify into deep depression.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department the system lay centered on Tuesday 240 kms south-south east of Chennai. Under its influence rain was lashing Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The skies over both the State were covered by thunder clouds.

The IMD has also forecast rains at many places in Rayala Seema and Andhra Pradesh. While the system was causing rains in many parts of southern India, the bad news was that it was likely to delay the onset of South-West Monsoon along the South-West coast of India.

“Because of the depression now it may take long for the core monsoon winds to consolidate over the seas”, an IMD source said.

The IMD has already forecast that the onset of monsoon over Kerala was likely to be delayed by a week to June 7 with a model error of plus or minus 4 days.

The effect of the depression was also being felt at some places in Telangana including Hyderabad city where the city remained overcast on Tuesday and the temperatures had come down.
