A Delhi court on Thursday allowed French national Marie Emmanuelle Verhoeven to return to her country after the MEA withdrew its previous order to deport her to Chile. Verhoeven was arrested in February 2015 on a request from Chile Government and an Interpol Red notice against her for alleged involvement in the assassination of Chilian senator Jaime Guzmán Errázuriz in 1991. Verhoeven had entered India on a tourist visa through Nepal in 2015. She was later granted bail in June 2016. Verhoeven contested her detention in the Indian courts where she was represented by lawyer Ramni Taneja. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy also petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for Verhoeven’s release, explaining that holding her in India on Chile’s request was illegal. French embassy too had approached Indian government seeking her return to France on the ground that she was not keeping well and deteriorating health. The French Government also said it will deal with Chile directly in this matter as the two countries have diplomatic relationship.  In its latest order dated July 26, 2017, the MEA withdrew its previous order of 14/12/2015 and allowed Verhoeven to go back to France following which Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jyoti Kler ordered for the release of her passport to allow her return.
