Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday reviewed the overall security situation in the country and the neighbourhood with the three Services chiefs, including Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh and IAF chief R K Bhadauria.
The meeting held here focused on operational preparedness with stress on level of alertness on the borders especially after abrogation of Article 370 giving special status to Jammu & Kashmir in August, officials said later.
The meeting comes in the backdrop of Pakistan stepping up ceasefire violations along the Line of Control(LOC) since August and making a determined bid to push in militants into Jammu & Kashmir to foment violence. At least 250 well-trained militants are now waiting in launch pads all along the 750-km line of LOC to infiltrate and the Minister took stock of the measures taken to meet this challenge, sources said.
Amidst threats of terrorists using sea routes to infiltrate, the high-powered meeting also reviewed the preparedness to negate such attempts. Moreover, the steps taken to increase vigil in the strategically important Indian Ocean region also came up for discussion, they said.
The IAF’s strategy to guard the Indian airspace amidst heightened tension with Pakistan and its efforts in conjunction with the Army and the Navy to thwart any nefarious designs from across the border were also reviewed, sources said.
