Awareness on issues of violence against women after the New Delhi ‘Nirbhaya’ case as well as compulsory registration of cases has increased the number of cases of violence against women, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the legislative Assembly.
Replying to a question during question hour in the recent budget session, Parrikar said that even as cases of heinous rapes and crimes against women had reduced, the cases of minor sexual assault had gone up.
“During the year 2013 in the first three months the number of heinous sexual assault cases like rape have declined. However, the cases of other minor sexual assault have shown a slight increasing trend,” Parrikar said.
The increase, the Chief Minister said, was “in view of the awareness created by the Nirbhaya case and also due to the direction of the Government to compulsory register the cases”.
The question was raised by an independent legislator Rohan Khaunte, who sought information on the issues of crimes against minors especially sexual crimes.
