A debt-ridden farmer from Gadwal district on Tuesday attempted suicide in front of the camp office of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
Mallesh, a farmer from Alur village, came to Hyderabad on Tuesday morning to meet the Chief Minister. But when the security personnel did not allow him to enter his camp office Pragati Bhavan, he consumed the pesticide he had brought with him. As he collapsed, the police personnel on security duty gave some medical help before rushing him to Gandhi Hospital. Doctors termed his condition as serious.
The farmer told the reporters that all his efforts to seek help from the Government had come to a naught. “I was running from pillar to post for the last three months but did not get any help,” he said. Mallesh said that he had written letters to the district collector as well as TRS MP K Kavita but nothing came out of it.
He had a debt of Rs2 lakh which he accumulated in five unsuccessful attempts to dig a bore well in his dry land.
The incident has brought the continuing problem of suicide by the debt ridden and stressed farmers in Telangana.
TRS government in the State say that it has waived off farm loans of Rs14,000 crore over the last three years. But the Opposition allege that the Government policy of waiving the loan of a farmer only upto Rs1,00,000 has not helped the situation and the crop failure over the last three years has brought more farmers under the debt burden.
