Controversy and Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb seems to have become synonymous.
Deb stirred yet another controversy on Wednesday by saying that Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore had repudiated his Nobel prize awarded to him in protest against the then British Government.
“Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore was not only a world poet. He was not only the personality who had repudiated the Nobel Prize awarded to him in protest against the British government,” said Deb while speaking at a function to Celebrate Rabindra Jayanti in Agartala.
Tagore won the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his much celebrated anthology Gitanjali (1910). The Nobel laureate, who was awarded a knighthood in 1915, however, repudiated it in 1919 as a mark of protest against the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre.
Deb who took over as the Chief Minister of Tripura only two months back, stirred a controversy by saying that internet and satellite communication existed during the Mahabharata era. Following this, Deb also questioned the crowning of Diana Hayden as Miss world in 1997.
Deb has recently advised the educated youth in his state to “set up paan shops instead of running after political parties for several years to get government jobs and waste vital time of their life.”
