Dawood's brother released on bail

Iqbal Kaskar, younger brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was granted bail by a city court on Monday, nearly a week after he was arrested on charges of assaulting a real estate agent and attempting to extort money from the latter.

Accepting the defence lawyer’s contention that Kaskar was no longer required by the police for custodial interrogation in connection with the case, a metropolitan court released him on bail on a cash surety of Rs50,000.  The court, however, directed Kaskar to report to the police station concerned as and when he was asked to do so.

The court had earlier remanded Kaskar in judicial custody till February 20, despite the police having sought his further custody to investigate his links with Dawood and the latter’s involvement in the case.

Acting on a complaint lodged with them by a real estate agent Salim Shaikh on February 2, the J J Marg police had booked Kaskar and two of his associates for allegedly thrashing the complainant and demanding Rs3 lakh from him.

Kaskar had been booked under sections 385 (Putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC.
