Dandwat ruckus: WB BJP writes to Prez

The Bengal BJP has written a letter to President Droupadi Murmu seeking justice for some tribal women in Balurghhat district in North Bengal where they were allegedly made to conduct a “dandwat parikrama” or crawl for about a km as a mark of penance for quitting the ruling Trinamool Congress and joining the BJP.

Demanding strict action against the perpetrators of the crime — here a woman TMC leader and a former district party president — Majumdar said “we have written letters to the President of India and National Commission for Scheduled Tribe seeking action because these three women were subjected to cruel medieval torture for leaving TMC and joining BJP.” They were forced to perform “dandavat parikrama (covering a distance touching ground with entire body, standing up to repeat the act till  distance of a km was covered up to TMC party office where they were handed over Trinamool flag,” Majumdar said adding “this cannot go unpunished.” While TMC had promptly removed woman leader from her post replacing her with a tribal face, Majumdar said his party demanded action as per law. “let the leader be arrested and case started against her under IPC and ST laws so that examples can be set for future.”

Unwilling to let go an opportunity to further consolidate its toehold among the adivasi voters Bengal BJP on Monday stepped up its movement against TMC’s alleged anti-tribal act. Senior leaders like Majumdar and BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh led a massive rally to DM’s office.
