A Public Interest litigation has been filed in Calcutta High Court seeking CBI investigation to find out the mystery behind rags-to-riches story of at least 23 Bengal politicians whose fortunes have grown manifold in the past five years.
In their petition advocates Anindya Sundar Das and Biplab Chowdhury, both residents of Birati in northern fringes of Kolkata have claimed that fortunes of these Bengal ruling party leaders mostly MlAs and Ministers have grown 200-300 or even 2000 fold.
They have cited affidavits filed by these politicians during 2011 and 2016 elections. “And this is just the tip of the iceberg because it is public knowledge that contestants show only a percentage of their assets during the elections,” said another fellow advocate of the High Court. Incidentally the opposition has repeatedly linked the politicians named in the PIl to the multi-crore chit fund and TET scam.
“There were people who would travel in buses before 2011. Now they travel in imported cars, own multiple apartments, both in Kolkata and outside — sometimes in foreign countries, huge amount of jewelry and cash stashed away in banks” said CPI(M)’s Sujan Chakrabarty wondering why the CBI was going slow after the arrest of Sudip Bandopadhyay in Rose Valley scam.
