Busting a major corruption racket by Indian Revenue Service officials, the CBI on Tuesday booked Financial Advisor and Chief Administrative Officer of Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) Sanjay Kumar for alleged possession of disproportionate assets.
After registering a case against Kumar, the CBI conducted searches at seven locations in three cities and seized documents of property estimated to be worth `19 crore, besides fixed deposits to the tune of Rs74 lakh and one kg gold ornaments, agency sources said.
The properties are located in upscale locations in Bangalore, Delhi, Navi Mumbai and Andheri in Mumbai. Documents relating to his bank lockers have also been recovered during the searches but they are yet to be opened.
While four such properties are located in South Extension locality here, one each is in Bangalore, Navi Mumbai and Andheri in Mumbai.
This besides, documents seized also suggested a monthly rental income of Rs15 lakh per month by Kumar.
CBI sources said a case has been registered against Kumar, an IRS officer of 1991 batch, for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The searches were carried out at seven locations in Delhi, Mumbai and Patna, including the office of EPFO at Bhikaji Kama place in New Delhi.
Agency officials said despite Kumar being an Income Tax officer he did not file income tax returns on his own and had hired a Mumbai-based Chartered Accountant Jay Gupta for managing his allegedly ill-gotten wealth.
Gupta’s premises were also searched simultaneously on Tuesday and the agency has seized documents suggesting linkages with other corrupt officials.
Officials said probe into Kumar and Gupta’s lockers is likely to yield more incriminating documents.
