Curbs on I-Day in Jammu areas

Published on:

Eight out of 10 districts of the Jammu region are facing the spectre of organising low-key 67th Independence Day celebrations as curfew continued for the sixth day without any relaxation in violence-hit Kishtwar and across seven other districts of the region with periodic relaxations during the day.

The Army jawans continue to patrol in Kishtwar and other districts to prevent any flare-up. Meanwhile, tensions have partially eased out in Jammu after Chamber of Commerce and the State BJP decided not to extend the bandh call on Wednesday. The decision was taken following written assurances from the State Government that the disbursement of the relief to the victims in Kishtwar and other places shall be made within one month of the assessment.

In the curfew-bound districts of Jammu, the police contingents and other armed forces are likely to participate in the Independence Day functions sans presence of school kids and cultural troops which traditionally add colour to the celebration.Continuous rain across the region have also compounded to the miseries of the district authorities as the parade grounds are soaked under water. Briefing mediapersons about the prevailing law and order situation, Divisional Commissioner(DC) Jammu Shantmanu, IGP Jammu Rajesh Kumar and Deputy Commiss-ioner Jammu Ajeet Kumar Sahu on Wednesday evening said, “The situation remained peaceful across Jammu on Wednesday as no untoward incident was reported during the whole day.” The DC said that curfew was relaxed in all the districts except Kishtwar. Official sources also confirmed that district authorities may give relaxation in curfew during the day but the night curfew would continue for more time to ensure normalisation.
