A local criminal has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering an 18-year-old girl and her minor sibling in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area on August 14.
“Mazhar alias Shekhar (23) was arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Wednesday from near the bus stand Wazirabad Bridge. Mobile phone of the deceased girl that had been robbed has also recovered from his possession,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
On August 14, naked body of a girl aged 18 years and a boy aged 9 years was found dead in pool of blood in a room on the first floor of the house at Shahid Bhagat Singh Colony, Karawal Nagar. They were brother and sister. Both of them were having injuries on neck and head.
"A case of murder was registered at Karawal Nagar Police Station. Subsequently, during the post mortem examination, the girl was also found to have been sexually assaulted. This was one of the most gruesome and reprehensible crime to have occurred and that is why Crime Branch was also roped in to investigate it," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Chand.
An exhaustive list of criminals which included sexual offenders, robbers, burglars and other criminals was prepared. During investigation, Mazhar alias Shekhar resident of Mukund Vihar, Karawal Nagar who was recently being released from jail and was not found at his residence since the day of incident.
Sources were deployed to track him and police managed to nab him yesterday.
"During interrogation, Mazhar told police that he along with his associate Sunny had committed the murder of both the girl and the boy. Mazhar had also sexually assaulted the girl," said Chand.
On the night of the incident, Mazhar had smoked ganja while Sunny was drunk. Both of them had set out to commit a burglary in a house which they had identified earlier but found it bolted from inside.
They then jumped into the adjacent house and reached the first floor where there were two rooms. They locked one room from outside and entered the other room. Here there they found a girl and boy sleeping. On hearing sounds of the burglars, the girl woke up.
"The duo assaulted her on the neck and head with the house breaking equipment which they were carrying. Subsequently, they also assaulted the boy. As the girl was semiconscious, Mazhar sexually assaulted her and took away her mobile and Rs 1200 from her purse. They then fled by scaling the wall," said Yadav.
Police Station Karawal Nagar has been informed about his arrest and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the co-accused Sunny, police said.
