Crack in new Metro pillar post quake

Published on:

There was concern among the people of Behala in South Kolkata as a pillar of the elevated track of the Metro Railways developed cracks soon after the Wednesday’s earthquake, sources said.

The crack appeared on a pillar — near Behala Police Station — at present under construction. The Esplanade-Behala-Joka Metro line was sanctioned by then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Police had cordoned-off the area and experts were called to examine the crack on account of the fact that the pillar stands right in the midst of the busy DH Road used by thousands of vehicles every day.

“The crack is a matter of concern as it appears not many days after the fly-over crash that killed many people” said structural engineer Partho Banerjee. Three tremors were felt around 7.30 pm in Kolkata and adjoining areas, sources said.
