Yechury asks Pranab to protect the sanctity of Constitution, democracy

Blaming the Centre for going ahead with “Ordinance Raj by subverting the Parliament”, CPI(M) on Wednesday urged the President not to sanction the move of the Centre to bring Ordinances on Insurances and Coal sector. In a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, the CPI(M) Parliamentary party leader Sitaram Yechury said the Centre’s move constitutes a grave violation of the conduct of business in the Houses of Parliament.

“I am seeking your intervention to ensure that the established Parliament procedures are not violated undermining our Parliamentary democracy. More than anybody else, with your long experience and vast knowledge of the Rules of both houses of Parliament, I believe, that you are the most competent authority to intervene and protect the sanctity of our Constitution and Parliamentary democracy,” said Yechury.

The CPI(M) leader pointed out that out of the 16 Bills in tabled in lok Sabha, 13 Bills were passed without sending to Standing Committees. Terming this practice as “brutal exercise of tyranny of democracy”, he said in Rajya Sabha three such Bills passed by lok Sabha were sent to Select Committees, which quite an unprecedented in number.

“I am sincerely requesting you to intervene in order to ‘nip in the bud’ such tendencies which may result in imposing an authoritarian manner of parliamentary functioning. This would be completely antithetical to the letter and sprit of our Constitutionally established Parliamentary Democracy,” said Yechury, alleging most of the bills were passed in lok Sabha without proper debate and by using brute majority of BJP-led Government.
