Court stays death warrant of UP woman, husband

The SC on Monday stayed the death warrant of a UP woman and her husband, involved in killing seven members of the woman’s family including her aged parents and a 10-month infant.

On May 15, the court had upheld the death sentence on Shabnam and Salim following which a UP court issued the warrant on May 21. As the warrant could be executed anytime, their lawyers approached the SC to stay the execution of the warrants as under law, the couple were entitled to a review petition in open court by not less than SC three judges. The Bench realised the urgency in the matter and sought response from UP Government by Wednesday.
