The Corbett Tiger Reserve authorities nabbed two Bawaria poachers and recovered four gin traps while two accomplices of the poachers managed to escape. Satveer, the son of notorious tiger poacher Priya Bawaria and Jhalle Ram, believed to be his relative were nabbed by the authorities on Thursday night.

According to the Corbett deputy director Saket Badola, based on intelligence about some unknown persons moving in the forests, the Corbett SOG and department personnel began searching for the suspects on Thursday. “On seeing four persons near the Sita river in Jhirna range bordering Uttar Pradesh, we chased the men and nabbed two of them while the other two managed to escape.

The two apprehended were identified as Bawaria poachers while their two accomplices who managed to escape are known to our staff as notorious wildlife criminals residing around the Tumbadia dam near Jaspur. While one gin trap and a chain were recovered from the two arrested poachers, during interrogation they revealed that they had hidden three traps on the other side of the Kosi river in Ramnagar division in the past. Acting on this, department staff uncovered these traps which had been buried in the jungle,” he said. Their arrest, especially the son of Priya Bawaria who is wanted for past crimes, is being seen as a big success for the Corbett authorities.
