Unidentified militants shot dead a policeman working with the counterinsurgency wing of the constabulary in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday afternoon.
Sources said constable Gowhar Ahmad Tantray was on way to his native village Kujjar riding a motorbike when armed militants waylaid him at Yaripora and fired upon him from point blank range.
The state police chief Shesh Paul Ved has issued advisory to the policemen and officers three months ago to avoid visiting their homes, especially in south Kashmir.
The advisory was issued following threats by militants groups. last month six policemen including Station House Officer of Acchabal police station were killed in a major strike.
Days later police killed Bashir lashkari and lashkar-eTayyeba militants and his two associates in an encounter. lashkari was suspected to be involved in attack on police party.
Sources said Tantray was rushed to hospital but doctors declared him dead on arrival. He was posted with Special Operations Group (SOG) in neighbouring Shopian district.
